Amiga Flame is 2 years old on the 13th of October. Amiga Flame it is fair to say began from literally nothing, it was built upon hope, the hope that there was a future for the Amiga. It set up with two principle aims, to prove to Amiga Gamers that the Amiga Games Market was alive and kicking with many games under development and the creation of new Amiga Games Publishers. Its second aim which many readers may not know was to help these new Games Developers find Publishers. Over 96 and 97 both of these principles were achieved with the help of readers, developers and publishers who in their own right made Amiga Flame. I remember how in an interview for Amiga Computing I described how I seen the state of the Amiga Community - "Many Amiga were convinced the games market was doomed. It was as though they were in a dark room and could see no future, only darkness. I had to light up that room and show them that there are many amazing and exciting games in development. Every week I put up games news to prove this was the case". Back then I had only a few News articles going up each week but today I am sending up more than ever before and the News is always coming in. There is now a recognition that the Amiga Games Market is holding its own.
Amiga Flame has been an evolving magazine that is why there have been attempts to bring you the reader closer to the Amiga industry through interviews that have revealed their struggles, their hopes and aspirations. I must ask that you reciprocate this by supporting the developers and publishers by e-mailing your support, it gives them that added incentive to speed up developments - I don't ask for much in return for my own hard work and for theirs. These attempts will continue to give you a closer insight and there is the possibly of Features on particular aspects of Amiga Gaming, but that remains under wraps, till the time is right. I hope to follow the progress of Amiga Inc as they progress forward with their strategy and hope to once again to be at the next World Of Amiga show to see the Amiga NG.
Some readers have asked me how successful the Amiga NG could be especially in the UK and I am going to give my own personal viewpoint. You see when a parent wants to get some sort of entertainment for their children they only have really two choices; a pc or a console. Parents are not stupid anymore they know that if a pc is cheap, its spec is probably low and so when they look for the up to date spec, the price is well over 1,000 UK Pounds. They also know that a pc needs to be upgraded regularly - it is just not worth it. When they look at the Console, the price is affordable although the games pricey. But were are the benefits in their children playing games all day, they can't use it for future school work or art packages, creative software or even business software as they grow older.
You see if the Amiga NG entered into the UK market priced at about 500 UK Pounds as Amiga Inc have said, parents are going to see that they are buying a product that their children can play games on and as they grow older they can use the creative and business software or whatever they want. The Amiga won't be seen as the cheap alternative, the Amiga will be seen as the computer at the right price for all.
The Amiga will be released in time for the new millennium and I hope that the beginning of that millennium heralds the return of the Amiga.
