Confusion Over Amiga's OS Kernal

Amiga President, Jim Collas has caused confusion amongst the Amiga Community and even anger regarding the decision and especially the way it was handled to use Linux as part of the Amiga's Operating Environment rather than QNX's.

It was a couple of nights ago on Thursday the 8th that QNX revealed the advanced operating system that would once again put Amigans at the forefront of technology said Dan Dodge CTO, QNX Software Systems.

The engineers at QNX have obviously been working hard
Dan Hodge explained that over 40 engineers have been working on the OS for over seven months and that development is in the final stages with QNX poised to put these new technologies into the hands of thousands of serious, enthusiastic developers. QNX even released screenshots on their web site and set up the QNX Developers Network for Amigans so qualified Amiga developers will receive, at no charge, a complete beta development package that includes the QNX Realtime OS, a suite of state-of-the-art multimedia technologies, the unique network-distributed Photon microGUI, and a self-hosted development environment.

CTO of QNX Software Systems, Dan Hodge committed themselves to becoming a fully active member of the Amiga community, and to working closely with Amigans to create the next revolution in multimedia computing.

The response was positive with Amiga owner, Claus Luethje saying Wow! I want that now referring to QNX's OS. Upon looking at the screenshots of the OS, Kevin Tiernan said, Boy those screen shots look brilliant and Zane H. Healy more enthusiastically commented, Those screen shots look absolutely killer!!!.

It was only a few hours later that the bombshell hit, Amiga President Jim Collas announced that they had selected Linux as the OS kernel for the new Amiga Operating Environment effectively abandoning QNX. It is even stated on the Amiga web site that they had selected Linux after several months of evaluating the technical progress of the OS and the tremendous industry support that Linux has gained with Jim Collas commenting that they had only finalized our (Amiga ) decision until several weeks ago.

It seems clear that Amiga President, Jim Collas has kept the Amiga Community out of the loop on this issue, and perhaps this is where much of the Amiga Community anger has been placed; that the Amiga Community was not properly informed on this matter. The decision was treated at first with shock with Amiga owner, Rob Pagano thinking it to be some sick, cruel, joke, that the Amiga web site had been hacked. There was then criticism from those Amiga users opposed to the decision made by Jim Collas. Teemu I. Ylisel said I must say the Linux decision seems like a step backwards and influential Amigan, Dave Haynie stating, Clearly, Collas and company have lost it bigtime. There was some positive points made with one Amiga owner saying that LINUX is absolutely Great and Ray Lane constructively said I vote for letting Amiga decide. They have engineers, and researchers that just might know what they're doing. However it was clear that some Amiga owners have been left a little confused and bewildered by the decision with Joakim Svrd pointing out If Amiga don't want to develop it's own thing, how can they be the leaders!? I'm so disappointed... Perhaps a comment that I would agree with came from an unnamed individual who said on Amiga's Bulletin board, I was very excited about QNX and I am a bit unsure about the Linux choice. I hope Amiga did the right thing.

Jim Collas said that they came to the decision that Linux gives us a better chance of executing our (Amiga) plans successfully and it was made as Linux has been picking up substantial momentum over the past year as a viable, open OS alternative in the marketplace. He also made the significant point that the OS kernel is only one component of the new Amiga OE (Operating Environment) and by using Linux as our OS kernel allows us to build a unique and revolutionary operating environment while leveraging the enormous momentum of Linux.

Obviously this is the end of what could be described as Jim Collas's honeymoon period, and there is sure to be plenty of effort from Amiga (the company) to defuse tension before the run up to the World of Amiga show. However, it is possible as some people have suggested that Amiga's technology brief could help Amiga owners understand the decision and more of Amiga's plans. It is to go public in the coming days.

What does clearly come out of this incident is Amiga's lack in providing clear information to the Amiga Community. Let's hope that Jim Collas's first blunder in handling this issue will be his last.
